Stargazing Party

Stony Brook Middle School, 9 Farmer Way
**Please note that we postponed the Stargazing Program that was originally scheduled for 10/15 due to the cloud cover that evening. We rescheduled it for Thursday, October 22nd 6:00-7:30PM at Stony Brook Middle School’s Field. If you have have already registered for that one, you are all set and your registrations will be kept in place.
Join us for an evening of stargazing at Stony Brook Middle School! We’ll go stargazing with members of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston. They will bring along their telescopes to get a great look at the night sky. Please feel free to bring along your own telescope too! This program is for all ages (recommended for ages 5+). We will need clear skies, so please check our website for updates. This event is weather dependent. Questions? Please email us at youthservices@westfordma.gov.
A star party is a gathering of amateur astronomers who set up their telescopes and other observing equipment so attendees can view the night sky. It is wonderful way to see things that you normally can’t see without a telescope. During a typical start party you may view the moon, planets, stars, galaxies and more.
This fun event is sponsored by the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston, Westford Climate Action, the Westford Recreation Department, and the J.V. Fletcher Library.
Strega Mama Storytime:
Dia de Los Muertos

Join us for a Dia de Los Muertos storytime featuring performer Strega Mama! We’ll read a picture book together, sing songs, play a skeleton game, then through a roll of the dice everyone gets a chance to add something to our very own Ofrenda! Create a Dinosaur Mosaic with Tiny Tile Mosaics

Create a fun dinosaur mosaic as part of our DiNOVember celebration!
Join Crystal D’Abbrachio, of Tiny Tile Mosaics, for this creative workshop. All supplies are included. This workshop is open to children ages 5 and up.
Young participants will learn about mosaic art and have the opportunity to work with colorful mosaic tiles to create their dinosaur mosaic in a wood bezel. Children will have time to apply the mosaic tiles with adhesive during the workshop and will take the grout (and grouting instructions) home with them to finish once it is fully dry. Owls Up Close by Eyes on Owls (ALL AGES)

Who’s watching you? Find out on Tuesday, November 10th when Eyes On Owls presents a live owl program at the Abbot School Gymnasium. All who attend are in for some fun with close-up views of these secretive birds of prey.
Naturalists Marcia and Mark Wilson will present “Who’s Watching You? Owls of the World.” The Wilsons introduce the audience to six owls found in New England and as well as other parts of the world. Marcia imitates the owls’ calls herself, paying special attention to the more common owls that we might encounter in our area.
After a hooting lesson and much audience anticipation, Marcia brings out the live owls one at a time. With each owl perched securely on her gloved hand, she walks out in front of the audience with six or seven owls. There’s plenty of time for close-up views and questions. Each owl presented has a permanent disability that prevents them from surviving on their own in the wild. These non-releasable owls are captivating ambassadors from the world of wildlife. The Wilsons are legally permitted by state and federal agencies to use live owls in their environmental educational programs.
Which owl eats skunks? Can a little detective work reveal where owls live near you? What do pellets tell us about an owl’s diet? How can we protect owls and their habitats? The Wilsons explore these questions and more during this fun, interactive program.Questions? Please email us at youthservices@westfordma.gov.

ZMakesBeads with Zangar

Join us for a creative and meditative beading workshop for kids! Zangar of ZMakesBeads will be here to lead this expressive arts workshop that teaches participants the basics of beaded jewelry making and the difference between semi-precious stones and precious stones. The materials used are semi-precious stones and other natural jewelry materials. Semi-precious stones have been appreciated for generations. Young participants will leave with their own handmade jewelry. No prior art or jewelry-making experience required, all materials and tools are provided. Zangar Freeman is a first-generation Liberian‑American jewelry artist, educator, and veteran. With a background in social work and over a decade of experience in jewelry-making, His work across New England emphasizes accessibility, cultural storytelling, and the power of creative practice as a grounding and reflective tool.

Family Concert with Sulinha’s Trio

Join us for a fun music concert with Sulinha’s Trio for children (ages 0 to 5) and the families and caregivers.
Sulinha’s Trio performs original children’s songs from her four children’s albums. Her songs are both educational and entertaining, covering topics such as kindness, pedestrian safety, movement, playing in the snow, dental hygiene, numbers, alongside some traditional children’s songs. Drawing from her Brazilian heritage, Sulinha incorporates Brazilian-music influences, featuring Bossa Nova and Baião styles. The Trio uses traditional instruments from Berimbau, Cuica, Pandeiro and Surdo and includes Sulinha on acoustic guitar, Julio Santos on percussion and Tristan Jantz on electric guitar.

Hands-On Hearing Loss
with Down the Tubes!

Hands-On Hearing Loss is an engaging, hands-on experience designed for children ages 5 through 9 to build understanding, empathy, and awareness of hearing loss and accessibility.
Through storytelling, exploration, and interactive activities, students will discover that people experience the world of sound in different ways and that technology can help make communication and everyday life more accessible.
The program begins with a read-aloud of Can Bears Ski? by Raymond Antrobus, a thoughtful story that provides an age-appropriate introduction to hearing loss and the experiences of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. Kids will then have the opportunity to explore several hands-on stations (independently and under the guidance of our presenters) to learn about accessible technologies used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing, including hearing aids, captioning glasses, alarm clocks, and more.
The experience is led by Julie DeMatteo-Lane and Brad McKenna, co-founders of Down the Tubes Productions, whose mission is to inform, educate, and entertain people with and without hearing loss about life with hearing loss. Julie is a career special education teacher with experience working with elementary-aged children, while Brad is a technology librarian who brings expertise in technology, information access, and hands-on learning.
Together, Julie and Brad create an inclusive and engaging learning experience that encourages students to ask questions, explore technology, develop empathy, and celebrate the many ways people communicate and experience the world. Questions? Please email youthservices@westfordma,gov.

Stuffie Sleepover

Bring your stuffies over to the Children’s s Room and let them roam the library overnight! Drop-off will be from 2 PM – 4:30 PM on Thursday, December 10th. You can pick them up Friday, December 11th, starting at 1 PM.
Drop off your stuffies and don’t forget to make them a nametag while you’re here! There will be lots of fun adventures in store for them! We’ll make sure to tuck them in for a good night’s sleep afterward. Pictures of what they got up to will be posted on the Children’s Instagram, @jvfletcherkids. Questions?
