Summer Reading Program (Up to Grade 4)

  • Summer Reading Program (Up to Grade 4)

The 2021 Summer Reading program has ended for this season. Thank you so much to all of you who signed up and showed up to find Waldo and to attend our outdoor programs. It was great for all of the Youth Services staff to see and spend time with our people.

Thanks very much to the Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library for funding our programs and raffle prizes and to the KDK Foundation for funding our traditional Harry Potter birthday celebration and the special visit from Hodge Podge.

Usually the theme of the J.V. Fletcher Summer Reading program is a HIGHLY KEPT SECRET but that will have to wait until next year! The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is free and open to Westford children and out of town Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library from preschool to those entering 4th grade in September. Older children entering 5th grade and up are encouraged to participate in the Tween and Teen program. Children can enter weekly raffles by filling out and submitting a weekly reading log.

Children who read will set weekly, individual reading goals with their parents. Reading goals will vary from child to child and perhaps from week to week. During this hopefully last summer with a modified summer reading program, we will be using a Google Form for registration and for your weekly reading logs.

Children who are read to can also participate!

Here is a video of Miss Nancy explaining how the program will work this year.

Please submit one form per child and tell your friends too! You can print the form if you prefer and get it to us any way that is easiest for you.

Summer Programs

Most of our programs are outdoor events (check the Summer Programs page for details about outdoor in person events and our virtual events.) Please register for events so that we know how many are coming and so that we can send you a zoom link for rained out story times. All events are FREE this year due to the restrictions of the corona virus. The Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library are still generously funding ALL events for this year’s program.

  • LIVE Events: All events except for the Red Sox mascot Wally, the Harry Potter trivia, and pajama story time will happen in person, distanced, weather permitting, and outside. All of our outside events have ONE listed rain date. We will notify you as early as we can if we will use the rain date.
  • LIVE VIRTUAL: Wally from the Red Sox will be do a special virtual reading event. Our Harry Potter trivia event will be a virtual event (which was AWESOME last year) that you can tune into from where ever you may be on Harry’s birthday this summer (Saturday, July 31). This event is once again generously sponsored by the KDK Foundation (in honor of Kurt Kelly). By popular vote, pajama story time will be virtual.
  • ZOOM RAINED OUT: Please register for each Mother Goose and Camp Read A Lot program – if it rains, we will move these programs inside to our zoom studio and you can stay home and enjoy the program virtually. Registrants will get the “just in case” zoom link when you register.

Logging Your Reading

This summer we are using a Google form to record your summer reading. Fill out a reading log and submit it once a week – you can go back in and edit this entry if you read more after submitting. It is entirely up to you how much you read in a week – you set your own goals and have fun! Each week, we will take all of the names from the logs submitted and do a weekly raffle drawing for a book themed stuffed character with an accompanying book. The first week to log reading starts June 27.

Raffle Prizes

Because of the restrictions of the corona virus, we are suspending weekly prizes this year and will go back to weekly in person prizes next summer. For this summer, we will have a weekly raffle with winners chosen from the names who submit a reading log for the week. Each prize will be one of the plush characters below along with a book. Those prizes can be picked up using our curbside service.

Where’s Waldo?

This summer Nancy is THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE that she will be hiding a Waldo Funko Pop around the CHILDREN’S ROOM. Find him and enter a raffle to win him.

Your name will be entered into an end of summer raffle every time you fill out a ticket so find him every week. At the end of the summer, one lucky winner will get to keep Waldo.
